Can I upload full text of old books online or do I need to ask permission first?
January 312010
I have several old books from various publishers that I want to upload the full text of online. Can I do that or do I need to ask permission first? How do I go about that? What are the legal issues, if any?
I think the key to your answer your question might be, " Is the book still protected by copyright?"
For instance, Project Gutenberg does exactly what you are talking about.

They take old books and turn them into electronic books.

no you shouldn’t because that’s called plagiarizing, and if anyone that works with that person or company you can get sued for a lot of money

I’m pretty sure you’ll have to ask the publisher first, thats if you want to do things legally!!
Check with your local government about the issue and they might be able to point you in the right direction about the laws in which surround the issue and how to comply with them. Another place to go is a state library!!
Goodluck

You st have the copyright holder’s permission unless the work is so old it is in the public domain.
