Is it legal to put books online without permission?

December 32010

There are a lot of websites where you can read books online for free. Is it legal for just anyone to put books online for anyone to read, or do you need permission?

It depends…is the book still under copyright protection or not? For instance, lots of very old books (100 years and older) are out of copyright and they can be published online (think "Project Gutenberg"). In the case of other books, their author has given permission for them to be published online, either in whole or in part. Unless you are 100% sure that the copyright has expired, don’t upload any book on to the net without written permission from the author/publisher. Good luck and God bless.

where can I listen to Nora Roberts books online for free and without having to download or use a MP3?

November 162010

I would like to just listen to Nora Roberts books online while I work. But you either have to download or have a MP3 player. Is there any link I can go to just to listen?

Ok, Nora Roberts books are copyrighted and there should be no way to listen for free. However, you can check out the audio books from your local library and listen to them at work.

Any site that offers a FREE copy of a copyrighted book is actually giving you a nasty. Sometimes you get it with the book, but most often you just get the nasty and no book. My own books have been offered by a site located in Estonia, but they didn’t actually have my books. They just had the titles and artwork.

Would it be legal to talk about books online?

Would it be legal to talk about books online?
I am thinking of starting a blog that criticizes books. I have read the Langdon’s trilogy (Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, etc), and I am planning on criticizing it and more. I want it to be like Ebert & Roeper. Is it legal?

I might accidentally give away the plot. I don’t want to be sued. Is it better if I do it with the books that their copyright is ended?

So long as you do not impugn the author personally, you can critique their books. You can discuss the endings, although you may want to CLEARLY notify readers with "Spoiler Alert," if you are going to give away an ending, so that those who have not read the book have the choice to stop reading further.

It is better if you can discuss the writing style without giving away the plot as much as possible.
I suggest you read some book reviews to become familiar with how book critiques do this for a living, before criticizing a book and giving away the plot. You will garner far more readers that way.

Best of success to you!

What can i do to maximize my comfort reading books online/at computer? comparing to reading books in hand?

November 112010

I have some awesome interesting books at my laptop. but the problem is i don’t find that much comfort reading online or at the system ! What can i do to maximize my comfort reading online/ at the computer?
my eyes hurt a bit !

If you’re serious about the digital book thing you might want to consider getting an e-reader. If you get one with an e-ink screen (no backlight, no color), it reads just like paper so you don’t get the eye strain you get with a computer.

I have a NOOK I love but Amazon makes the Kindle, Sony makes a few, and I think Borders has one or will have one soon.

Just an idea because there really isn’t a way to make it comfortable to read on a computer. Just make sure that the e-reader supports the format your e-books are in.

Where can i get used cheap books online with low shipping?

November 62010

My issue here is that in most used book stores online, it is a good price for books, but i have to pay 6-8$ shipping on each book. so i would like to find a site where the books are actually owned by the site, so i do not need to pay shipping to so many separate people.
Not e-bay or amazon, Read the description under the question.

The best option out there that I could find was http://www.bigwords.com. They searched all throughout the online textbook retailers and rental sites then compared all the lowest prices to find me the best deal. It’s always a huge money saver because of that. Most sites limit you and never really find you that great of prices. But with bigwords.com, I’ve had the best luck with them. Hope this helps!
