What are some good mystery books?

April 22011

Can you give me some good books in the mystery genre? I’ve read Dan Brown and Agatha Christie. Any mystery is ok, but I prefer murder-mystery.

My mum reads a lot of murder mystery by Ian Rankin and Stuart MacBride, she says they are the best. I’m not sure where your from but I’ll leave a British link to what my mum says is the best book she’s read by either of them.

I’m not sure, never read any murder mystery really, I prefer watching them myself. They both have a lot of books so, hope I could help.

What are some good murder mystery books?

March 292011

I can’t find any good teen murder mystery books, and I really want too………I’ve already read the pretty little liars series so don’t say those…..please help!!
Also, I’m looking for a murder mystery book that has comedy and romance to it….
Thanks for the author thoughts already, I’ll check them out, thanks to all!!!!!!

Six Geese A Slaying, Donna Andrews (she has written other mysteries with birds in the title: Cockatiels at Seven, Revenge of the Wrought Iron Flamingos, etc. These are funny and fun to read.)

The Ballad Mysteries by Sharon McCrumb (If I’d Killed Him When I Met Him, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, etc. Mysteries with barely a hint of the supernatural.).

The Thomas Linley series by Elizabeth George (these are very graphic with violence and sex)

The Temperance Brennan books by Kathy Reichs (the main character is a forensic pathologist)

The Gideon Oliver Series by Aaron Elkins (the main character is a forensic anthropologist)

The Grant County series by Karin Slaughter (these also have very graphic violence).

The Claire Malloy series by Joan Hess (more light hearted and fun to read)

Do you know of any good murder mystery books?

March 272011

Hi, I’m looking for some good murder mystery books, they have to be cozy/armchair mysteries, nothing too violently detailed. Any good Edwardian or Victorian set ones. Not M.C Beaton as I have read all of hers. Anything like the books by M.C Beaton or Simon Brett or Anne Perry. Any help appreciated, Thanks in advance :D

Try some of Rhys Bowen’s books like Her Royal Spyness. (She has about three series: one is modern, set in Wales about a policeman named Evan; another is set in the US in the 1800s, about an Irish immigrant named Molly; the third is set in the early 1930s England. The last named is the Spyness series. Lady Georgiana is a plucky and resourceful young woman who solves mysteries while trying to avoid being married off to some brainless but wealthy young suitors. She’s had to (horrors!) find work because the family fortune isn’t what it used to be–hence the pressure to marry money. As you might guess, they’re light and funny, more like Beaton’s Hamish (so far I haven’t gotten into the Agatha Raisin books)

Have you tried any by Charles Todd? They’re set around the first World War and there are two series. One is the Inspector Rutledge: Rutledge is a shell-shocked veteran trying to return to his job after the War. PTSD wasn’t really well known or understood, so those around him don’t know about his struggles. The other series is Bess Crawford, who serves as a nurse during the war, which is still going on.

Let me ask an obvious question: have you read the classics? I’d highly recommend the Lord Peter series by Dorothy L. Sayers if you haven’t read those; they’re post WWI. Also Margery Allingham’s books and the still wonderful Georgette Heyer. I’m assuming you’ve read or rejected Agatha Christie.

(P.S. You do know that Beaton writes Edwardian and Regency romances under the name Marion Chesney, right?)

What are some good mystery books about treasure hunting?

March 192011

They don’t necessarily have to be about treasure. I just don’t want to read murder/crime mysteries. I’ve had my fill for the moment. Anything about solving riddles, discovering ancient secrets, finding treasure, finding lost places, anything like that. The more classic the better. Realistic or science fiction, doesn’t matter. A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne is kind of close. I really liked the National Treasure movies, books like that would be cool.

Suggestions anyone?

Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. The classic treasure hunt novel.

I’m looking for historical, mystery, and horror books to fill my free time during the school day?

March 172011

I’m going to have a much lighter schedule in the coming weeks due to a semester course ending soon. Thus, I’m going to have a lot of free time during the school day and I’m in need of some reading to fill my time. I love history and horror/mystery books. Are there any classics that you could recommend to me in this genre? Thanks

You can read the book "The Man
who saw tomorrow".It is a nice
book to read

What are some good mystery books with horror elements?

March 102011

Bonus points if it’s very character-driven. The only mystery books I’ve really read have been Agatha Christie’s, so I’m open to pretty much anything in the genre.

try anything by stephen king. he is an excellent horror fiction writer, and his books have memorable characters.
personal recommendations:

the shining (really good)
salem’s lot
the cry of the werewolf
it
firestarter (favorite)

all by stephen king

How do you feel when mystery books end unresolved?

March 52011

I know that in real life you don’t always get all of the answers. So when stories end without telling "whodunit", it’s more realistic, and can even be satisfying if done right. But it seems lately like ALL of the newer mystery books I’ve read end like this. Has anyone else noticed this trend? I feel like it’s kind of a cop out.

Oh I know!
It used to be unique now its getting kind of cliche.
I noticed and I am straying away from them.
The thing is now with all the science’s and evidence they can almost
always catch the real bad guy now. But not a lot of people take that into consideration.
The same ending for every other book is bothering me. :/

Mystery Books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

March 12011

Ok, so am in the mood to read some really intense Mystery/Detective. I already have All of the sherlock holmes books and edgar allan poe books but i want to try someone elses work. Are there any good book or authors out there that write great Mystery??? BTW Please i don’t want nancy drew or the hardy boys, i think that’s too easy for me :) thx!

Only this past year have I gotten into mystery, but the books I read are usually non-fiction, so I might not be the biggest help here… Anyways, I’m not sure how good they are, but what about trying James Patterson? I’ve read most of his Maximum Ride series, and I loved it, so his other books (which my mom buys too many of) are probably good too. And from what I’ve heard, if you like scary, try Stephen King. I’m not sure if you can categorize searches on book store websites, or your local libraries website, but you might want to try that for book ideas.

Hope I helped :)

What are some good mystery books for nine to ten year olds?

January 172011

I’m making my little brother read more because I don’t think he reads enough lol. He says that he’s interested in mystery or "scary" books. Any suggestions? Please. He’s going to turn ten, so don’t suggest books the size of Harry Potter books. Thanks.

Nine and ten year old kids are still very much into Goosebumps for the scary aspect.
The Last Apprentice by Joseph Delaney is fantasy with a definite creepy feel. Perfect for that age.
The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart is a good mystery type series with a lot of puzzles that give you something to think about.
