What’s the purpose of those metallic stickers you sometimes find in new books?

May 202010

Anyone ever purchase a new book and find a small (probably one inch by one inch) thing that looks like a gold metallic sticker with the paper backing still on, in between some random page halfway through?

They have a raised pattern on them, and almost remind me of a computer chip, although I don’t think they’re sturdy enough to be that.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about? What’s the purpose of those things and what are they called?

Generally these are termed "loss prevention devices" and they are unpowered circuits that work by receiving and echoing back a radio frequency "ping" from a transmitter in the store where the books are sold. They are deactivated at the checkout when you buy the book. Normally they are used to catch people who are "shoplifting" or trying to leave the store without paying for the book – by setting off an alarm at the entrance or exits where the transmitter is set up.
They have a very simple passive circuit that only works at close range to the transmitter – which is why they don’t set off the detector unless you are very close to them or between the sides of the detector .

Can anyone recommend a new series of books- I love Janet Evanovich and crime?

I love Janet Evanovich! But I can’t wait forever for new books I need a new series to occupy my time- any suggestions

Try Sarah Stromeyer’s Bubbles series. They are hilarious as well. Bubbles is a hairdresser who manages to find herself embroiled in different mysteries and situations. Nancy Martin is also great with her Blackbird books — there is a hideous dog featured that is a hoot! Also Mary Kay Andrews is great great great!!! You will probably find her in chick lit. She is probably the best of the bunch and my favorite of hers is called Savannah Blues. She is not series though…

Dick Russell Talks About Ventura’s New Book “American Conspiracies” on The Alex Jones Show 3/4

May 112010

Jesse Ventura tells it like it is, and this time he tackles our governments biggest secrets. In this explosive account of wrongful acts and on-going cover-ups, Jesse Ventura takes a systematic look at the wide gap between what the American government knows and what it reveals to the American people. For too long, we the people have sat by and let politicians and bureaucrats from both parties obfuscate and lie. And according to this former Navy SEAL, former pro wrestler, and former Minnesota governor, the media is complicit in these acts of deception. For too long, the mainstream press has refused to consider alternate possibilities and to ask the tough questions. Here, Ventura looks closely at the theories that have been presented over the years and separates the fact from the fiction.

In Venturas eyes, the murder of Abraham Lincoln and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, all need to be re-examined. Was Watergate presented honestly, or was the CIA involved? Did the Republican Party set out to purposefully steal two elections on behalf of George W. Bush? Has all the evidence been presented about the 9/11 attacks or is there another angle that the media is afraid to explore? And finally, is the collapse of todays financial order and the bailout plan by the Federal Reserve the widest-reaching conspiracy ever perpetrated?

If youre talking outspoken, unconventional, and no-holds-barred, youre talking Jesse Ventura.—Larry King

I wouldnt mind seeing Ventura run for president (or for senator, or dog-catcher, or whatever). In addition to talking conspiracy, hes likely to raise all sorts of other trouble.—Damon W. Root, Reason Magazine . About the Author Dick Russell is a nationally respected activist, environmentalist, and author of five critically acclaimed books, including The Man Who Knew Too Much and Don’t Start the Revolution Without Me (with Jesse Ventura). Russell is a prolific publisher in many of the nation’s top magazines and has been a guest on many national TV and radio programs, including the Joan Rivers Show and NBC Nightly News. Married and with one child, Dick Russell divides his time between Boston and Los Angeles.

Jesse Ventura is the former governor of Minnesota and author of several bestselling books, including Dont Start the Revolution Without Me! He lives in Dellwood, Minnesota and Baja, Mexico.

Are the new Dune books any good?

May 82010

Posted in new books | 4 Comments »

I’ve read Dune, Dune Messiah, The Children of Dune, and The God Emperor of Dune.

As far as I’m concerned Dune ended with the death of Leto II

Is there any incentive to reading the new books?

How do they compare?
Do the characters in the new books have the same depth as those by old Frank?

I’m with you on that one dude. When Frank Herbert died and the Dune saga was left unfinished I automatically selected the first four books as the best in the series.
I read the trilogy by his son (Houses Harko,Artreide, and Corrino) and they were’nt very good as far as my tastes go. specifically because they really didn’t add to the mythos.
The Machine Crusade and the Battle of Corrin meanwhile went against many of the ideas and concepts stated in the Encyclopedia of Dune ( which is non-canon but made with the approval of Frank Herbert ) although I liked the main story and treated them as such: stories of a distant past.
The fifth and sixth novels I really didnt like because the characters in them were so far from the qualities of Muad’Dib that they seemed like a totally different series.
The seventh novel ( published posthumously) dealing with the Honored Matres is more of the same, leaving me unsatisfied upon finishing it. The ending wasn’t elegant enough to compare to the first four books. What I really wanted was more of Paul and Leto, NOT evolved fish speakers and Tleilaxu spawn.

Stephen King Discusses New Book – Duma Key

May 72010

Stephen King talks about his new book, Duma Key.

Book Description:

No more than a dark pencil line on a blank page. A horizon line, maybe. But also a slot for blackness to pour through…

A terrible construction site accident takes Edgar Freemantle’s right arm and scrambles his memory and his mind, leaving him with little but rage as he begins the ordeal of rehabilitation. A marriage that produced two lovely daughters suddenly ends, and Edgar begins to wish he hadn’t survived the injuries that could have killed him. He wants out. His psychologist, Dr. Kamen, suggests a “geographic cure,” a new life distant from the Twin Cities and the building business Edgar grew from scratch. And Kamen suggests something else.

“Edgar, does anything make you happy?”

“I used to sketch.”

“Take it up again. You need hedges… hedges against the night.”

Edgar leaves Minnesota for a rented house on Duma Key, a stunningly beautiful, eerily undeveloped splinter of the Florida coast. The sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico and the tidal rattling of shells on the beach call out to him, and Edgar draws. A visit from Ilse, the daughter he dotes on, starts his movement out of solitude. He meets a kindred spirit in Wireman, a man reluctant to reveal his own wounds, and then Elizabeth Eastlake, a sick old woman whose roots are tangled deep in Duma Key. Now Edgar paints, sometimes feverishly, his exploding talent both a wonder and a weapon. Many of his paintings have a power that cannot be controlled. When Elizabeth’s past unfolds and the ghosts of her childhood begin to appear, the damage of which they are capable is truly devastating.
The tenacity of love, the perils of creativity, the mysteries of memory and the nature of the supernatural — Stephen King gives us a novel as fascinating as it is gripping and terrifying.
