I want to find a worthy cause in Portland Oregon to give used books. I want my used books to go to people who are in need. Any ideas?
Since you’d probably like to donate your used books to others who really need and could appreciate them, there are several organizations that would be happy to accept your book donations.
If you have children’s books, they can be donated to the Portland-based Children’s Book Bank which then sends these books to children around the world who need them. More information is available about this program at //portland.readinglocal.com/2009/10/23/childrens-book-bank-helps-close-the-book-gap/ and at the group’s website at http://www.childrensbookbank.org/Home.aspx.
The Oregon National Guard has a blog at http://oregonmildep.blogspot.com/2009/08/local-portland-business-owner-donates.html where you can see an article and get information about the group’s program to send comic books, etc. to deployed soldiers.
The Portland Books to Prisoners program, with its website at http://www.bookstooregonprisoners.org/, is another excellent place for used books. There are currently more than 2 million people incarcerated in state and federal prisons in the U.S., and prison libraries tend to very limited, and access to them is often highly restricted, so outside sources of donated books for these prisoners are welcomed. Books can really help those in our jails to improve their lives.
The Public Libraries in Portland often hold used book sales and the proceeds then go to funding library services in the community. If you’re interested in donating your used books to help this cause, you can click on http://www.portlandlibrary.com/aboutppl/BookDonations.htm, http://www.friends-library.org/booksale/donatebooks.html and http://www.multcolib.org/titlewave/ for more information.
There are other good suggestions about used books donations online at www.ecomii.com/local/portland/reuse-books and at other websites. These include, among others, Goodwill at http://www.meetgoodwill.org/, and Salvation Army at http://www1.usw.salvationarmy.org/usw/www_usw_cascade.nsf, which do good work for others.
If your used books are on a particular topic, you might consider donating these books to an organization or school that’s connected to this subject (such as astronomy books to a local club, etc.). Other places that would also appreciate your used books are hospitals, food pantries, school libraries, senior centers, women’s shelters, and similar places. Others can then enjoy and benefit from your donated books!
You can also sell many/most of your books to Powell’s Books or to some other used booksellers and then take the money you receive and donate it to a special cause. Many Portland booksellers are listed at the Portland Area Used Booksellers Association website at http://www.pauba.org/, and Powell’s can be reached at www.powells.com/info/contact.html.
There’s another way to recycle your used books that can be fun while it keeps your books in circulation. By going to and joining the free group, BookCrossing, at www.bookcrossing.com/, you register each book and receive a number. Then, in each book, you place its number on a sticker or label with instructions inside the front cover (these can be purchased online at http://secure.bookcrossing.com/ or made on your own computer), and you then put one or more books into a plastic bag or other protective cover or inside a location that’s well-trafficked and protected from rain, etc. (such as a college indoor eating area or a coffee shop, etc.) and "release" it/them. When someone "finds" your book and decides to keep it, they will go to the BookCrossing website and enter when and where they found the book. You’ll be notified by email and you’ll see all the places where each book has traveled! It can be quite interesting!
I love books and I always want them to have good homes where they’ll be appreciated! ;-o So, I hope this information is helpful! I wish you and your books all the best!
