Hi,
Sometimes people go to tried and true authors, but why not check out a new author? Check out books written by Vicki Delany or Julia Pomeroy--both write suspense novels. I know these authors and they have great books! If you want change of pace, read my books--they're mysteries, set in Harlem--a lil pathos, a lil' humor. Hard Luck and Trouble: A Landlord's Tale and Down and Dirty: Another Landlord's Tale.
In any case, have a happy summer of reading.
Best,
Gammy L. Singer
References :
The Artemis Fowl series is certainly "different" from whatever else is on my bookshelf, and is basically fantasy.
References :
Swan Song, by Robert R. McCammon is my favourite, want-to-read-it-from-cover-to-cover book. Patricia Perry does good fantasy (Quest for the Source of Darkness, the second of the trilogy is called The Fortress of Darkness and will be released in a few months). Michael Chrighton (sp?) is well known for his suspense thrillers.
References :
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Very Suspenseful. But give it a chance if you read it the first couple of chapters read slow but are important to understand the rest of the book. I highly recommend it. But if you do read it don't read the sequels they are by other authors and don't bring justice to the original.
References :
Mystery- Alphabet mysteries by Sue Grafton; mysteries by Sara Paretsky

Suspense- Clive Cussler, anything; Ed McBain 57th Precinct novels; John Sandford, Prey series; James Patterson, anything of his.

Fantasy- Tolkein, Hobbit and Lord of the Rings; Tracy Weis Margaret Hickman, Dragonlance chronicles and other books by both; The Belgariad series; Piers Anthony, Xanth novels.

Too many for me to remember but this is a good list.
References :
I like the sword of truth series by Terry Goodkind, they are more on the lengthy side though, around 700 to 800 pages per book. The first one is Wizards First Rule, theres 12 of them so it might keep you busy for awhile depending on your reading level, I finish them in about a week just reading around 2 hours before I go to sleep. Oh, almost forgot it is Suspense/Fantasy I guess I'm not sure what you mean on Suspense, it uses magic and the sorts. I can hardly put them down most of the time, one night I stayed up an extra four hours because I just couldn't put it down.
References :
http://www.prophets-inc.com/his_works/
